About TSC
Founders Chris Cutcliffe and Hunter Taylor have been close friends since the two started collaborating back in 2017.
Taylor - a faculty member at the University of Mississippi, and Cutcliffe – the head football coach for Oxford High School, bonded like most friends do over shared interests and values.
But they also connected through the similar reverence each had for their fathers’ work as revered football coaches in the towns and states they grew up in.
Chris’ father, David, was the Tennessee offensive coordinator and the Ole Miss head football coach during his childhood in Knoxville and Oxford.
And Hunter’s father, Bruce, was the defensive coordinator for White Oak High School and then Barbers Hill High School during his childhood in small-town East Texas.
As a result of these upbringings, both grew up with a heightened awareness that it’s hard to understand areas of the country like they grew up in without an appreciation for rituals like the pageantry of an SEC Saturday or the Friday night lights of a Texas High School stadium. Events like these dominate the conversations in most social settings – maybe even too much. But they also bring people together in these regions like nothing else.
Taylor Sports Club is a storytelling event that celebrates this idea.
At each meeting held in the majestic Plein Air neighborhood of Taylor, Mississippi, we’ll interview a different distinguished sports figure in front of a live audience and engage in a conversation about their personal history, and how their role as a coach or player gave members of our audience a shared history.
The first two meetings of the Taylor Sports Club took place in the spring of 2024, and were invitation-only to test and refine the idea before making it available to the public. They featured David Cutcliffe and Mississippi State’s Hall of Fame baseball coach, Ron Polk. Both were incredible, and each coach, in his own way, caused the audience to not only laugh and remember the times when their teams gave them so much joy to follow, but also to reflect on the life lessons that each coach had to offer. You can view brief recap videos of each session in our Calendar of Events section.
This fall (2024), Taylor Sports Club will offer its first full season of events that are open to the public. We hope you’ll become a member of our community, so you’ll know when these rich experiences become available. Our goal is that this event series grows into something that you look forward to regularly attending with people like your spouse, your parents, or your childhood best friends. That’s ultimately why we love still love sports so much – it brings people together.
